New Year's Day: Bowl game nirvana

Dec 31, 2006, 10:37pm | Posted by Steve

When I was a kid I always had mixed feelings about New Year's Day. I liked that there was football on TV all day long, but I was sad because it was usually the last day of winter break. By the time that long Orange Bowl halftime show began at night, I was usually beginning to feel a little depressed at the thought of waiting for the school bus in the cold and dark the next morning.

Now I'm grown, and I make it a point to take an extra half-day or so off from work, so Jan. 1 is nothing but a good time. And I'm hoping that means good betting. There are six games scheduled on the day, and so far I've got bets on two of them, I'm leaning heavy on another two — just hoping for the lines to creep down where I want them — and I'll be interested in watching the other two. Sounds like a good day in the making.

Here's what I'm on so far:

1/1/07 ACTION

Penn St. vs. Tennessee (-3), $130/$100

Nebraska vs. Auburn (-1), $120/$100

Michigan (PK) vs. USC, $110/$100

Boise St. vs. Oklahoma (-7), $220/$200

1/1/07 ADDED ACTION - 11:10am

Georgia Tech vs. W. Virginia, Over 47.5, $110/$100

Boise St. vs. Oklahoma, Over 49 $130/$100

Noon - Backing off Auburn

After watching the first half of the Cotton Bowl my confidence in Auburn has fallen somewhat. With the game tied 14-14 after two quarters, the second-half line works out that it allows me to hedge my original bet nicely, so I'm going to take this opportunity to buy a bit back by betting on Nebraska.

1/1/07 ADDED BET

Nebraska (PK 2H) vs. Auburn, $63/$60

7:35pm - ADDED BET

Boise St. vs. Oklahoma (-6.5), $110/$100

The line on the Fiesta Bowl just dropped a half-point in the minutes before kickoff, so I'm going taking the opportunity to bump my bet on Oklahoma. I feel very confident on this one.

9:35pm - ADDED BET

Boise St. vs. Oklahoma, Over 26.5 2H, $242/$230

It's shaping up to be a shootout in the Fiesta Bowl. I still think Oklahoma wins this game, but my -6.5 and -7 bets are in doubt. I'm jumping on the high-scoring bandwagon, though, and betting the second-half Over.
