Finally giving up on UTEP
Before the season started I had such high hopes for UTEP. They had a decent season last year, they've got a good coach (who knows how to have too good a time for Alabama, if you know what I mean), a whole pack of returning seniors and a quarterback who should have been very good. I won money betting on them in their season opener against San Diego State, but even in that game they didn't look solid. They've staggered to a 4-3 record on the season, but they've only beaten really weak teams (SDSU, New Mexico State, Tulane, SMU). The Miners just haven't been good.
I wanted to see them succeed, really I did. They're a good little brother school out there in El Paso, Mexico. (I know technically El Paso is part of Texas, but if you've ever been, you know it's Mexico.)
Tonight I'm giving up on them, and taking Tulsa to win, even spotting 14 points. Winds are gusting in Oklahoma right now, so I'm also taking the Under 54. I figure if it's windy, most of the scoring will come from Tulsa, because they can run the ball. UTEP can't. The one thing I can see possibly driving up the score is Miner QB Jordan Palmer throwing a handful of interceptions that result in scores. And that's a real possiblity.
ACTION
UTEP at Tulsa (-14)
UTEP at Tulsa, Under 54.5
Only half-units bets on both of these plays.
9:45pm, ADDED BET: A tiny, tiny play for the fourth-quarter (about 1/6 unit), just to try and get a little back, as both my Tulsa -14 and the Under 54.5 are looking in doubt. I took Tulsa -3 for the final quarter.
